(Beijing, January 25) The "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 Wheelchair Basketball International Invitational Tournament came to an end at the National Indoor Stadium this evening as both Canada's men's and women's teams came to the throne after defeating Australia and Germany respectively.

In the match vying for the women's third place, Japan built a big margin advantage in the third quarter and ousted China 61-44.

"We have just over 200 days to prepare for the Paralympic Games and through this high level tournament we've learned a lot and got improved in many aspects." China's guard Wang Lei noted after the game.

In the women's final showdown between Canada and Germany, a buzzer hit gave Canada the title. Athens Paralympic champions Canada had lost to Germany in OT in the preliminary rounds, but today they didn't give their counterparts the opportunity to head into overtime. The score was tied at 50 all with one minute remaining. It was Canada's Hai Poon who was fouled with one second left to end the match and hit one of two free throws to grab the win 51-50.

In the men's third place-decider, China fell to the Netherlands 58-46. Host China had suffered four straight losses before this match and had conceded to the Netherlands by big margin, 59-29, in the group heats. But the Chinese denied the strength gap to follow the Netherlands closely for over halftime this time.

Xu Yuansheng, head coach of China, said his team had benefited a lot from the five games. "I believe we could achieve better results in the Beijing Paralymic Games via intensified training and good preparation."

The men's final was taken on between Australia and Canada, the former prevailing on their qualifying meeting 57-46. However, Canada depended on a higher field goal percentage to beat the Australians 55-49 this evening and grabbed the gold medal.
