(Beijing, January 21) - Comments from coaches and players after Germany beat China 66-42 in the preliminary round.
GLINICKI Holger (GER) - Coach
On the best player:
"In this game, I made many substitutions but SCHUNEMANN Gesche (No. 10) was our Stand-out player who led the team in scoring. As for China, I think CHEN Damei (No. 10) was their best player, the one who scored a three-point throw."
On the weakness of CHN's team:
"It's a young team who do not have enough strength on the wheelchair and who allowed us to penetrated their zone qulte easily."
On rebounding:
Rebounding requires a lot of skill, since you first have to block the opponents and then quickly get the rebound."
KAHL Annette (GER) - Centre
On GER'S advantages:
"We always kept at least two tall players in the court, such as BUTTERBRODT Maren (No. 12), MOHNEN Marina (No. 15), SCHUNEMANN Gesche (No. 10) and me. Besides, we cooperated better as a team team than China did."
On the CHN team:
"Before coming to Beijing, I thought the Chinese beam was still weak but I see they have greatly improved. If they keep on this track, they will become a strong team in the near future."
ZHANG Santao (CHN) - Guard
On her role in the team:
"I am a pillar of support for the team so I aim to calm the other players during the game and allow them not to give in tonerves. I also support them in their everyday lives."
On the turnovers during the first two quarters:
"Our defence was sub-par and we lack experience in cooperating each other, which was reflected in our poor passing."
On improving in the third quarter:
"We just relaxed and thought about what we were doing. We then tried to set our plan in motion."
On GER's rebounds:
"Their wheelchair skills are excellent as some of their players have over a decade of experience. Germany is a splendid team, and we have many things to learn from them."
CHEN Damei (CHN) - Guard
On her good performance:
"At first, I was a little bit nervous. But I felt excited after scoring a 3-pointer."
On her 3-point throws:
"3-point throws are the most difficult part of wheelchair basketball. I have trained exclusively for that sometimes. I also went to the gym to build up my arm strength. There is also another way to practice. We filled a ball of sand and practiced to throw it high, We usually train for 2 hours daily. It was a few months before I could shoot well and sometimes, my arms ached from the training."
On what wheechair basketball means to her:
"After l had a car crash and became disabled, I was very distressed. Wheechair basketball brings a a lot of joy and confidence."
LIU Tiehua (CHN) - coach
On the performance:
"I think we played at 60% of our level, around the same as yesterday. The players have done their best."
On the opposite:
"Team Germany has been playing for over ten years, as opposed to just one year for China. There is naturally a great gap to overcome."
On the problems:
"I havet to admit that we have many problems, which need to be solved step by step. For now, we must focus on gaining more experience and strengthening our basic skills. The way to do this is to compete in more matches and draw some lessons from the whole process."
